Liberty Mutual is hiring a Principal Data Engineer to support the company’s Global Cybersecurity Data and Analytics team in Columbus, Ohio. In this role, you will lead complex data engineering work, shaping the architectures, pipelines, and visualizations that turn enterprise data into actionable insights for cybersecurity, governance, and compliance.
As a principal contributor, you will consult on and deliver data programs and tooling, improve data accessibility and quality, and help the organization translate technical capabilities into clear outcomes across the business. You will also apply AI tools to accelerate delivery while validating outputs and protecting confidential and customer data.
What you’ll do
- Consult on designing and building complex programs and tools to support ingestion, curation, and provisioning of enterprise data for analytics, reporting, and data science.
- Build and design data architecture that improves accessibility, efficiency, governance, and data quality.
- Collect, clean, and transform traditional and big data to ensure data accuracy and accessibility.
- Recommend improvements to data practices and drive those recommendations forward.
- Develop strong depth of knowledge in technology enablers and document existing processes, organizational structures, architectures, and external systems.
- Contribute to the development and enhancement of solutions aligned to key business outcomes.
- Create interactive, visually appealing data visualizations that help reveal patterns, trends, and correlations in large datasets.
- Provide guidance on Power BI visualization capabilities and functionalities, and educate stakeholders on using visualizations.
- Use AI tools to improve the speed, quality, and scale of work by identifying concrete workflows where AI adds value, critically evaluating and validating AI-generated output, and applying AI responsibly to protect confidential and customer data.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a technical or business discipline, or equivalent experience (technical degree preferred).
- Generally 8+ years of professional experience.
- In-depth knowledge of IT concepts, strategies, and methodologies.
- In-depth knowledge of diverse and emerging technologies, including new architectural concepts and principles.
- Knowledgeable in data engineering languages and tools, with proficiency in new and emerging technologies.
- In-depth understanding of layered solutions and designs, including shared data engineering concepts and product features with a security-minded approach.
- In-depth understanding of business operations, objectives, and strategies, including global business and technology trends in the financial services industry.
- Highly developed negotiation, consensus building, and influencing skills, plus facilitation and adaptability to respond quickly to change.
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills, including strong presentation skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of the organization.
- Solid Python (Pandas) and SQL programming skills with analytical and critical thinking, including understanding of big data technology.
- Understanding of machine learning principles, statistics, and algorithms.
- Understanding of data warehouse solutions, including modeling and governance.

Compensation
USD 120,000 - 225,000 per year. The typical starting salary range is based on factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. The full salary range reflects the competitive labor market value across the national market and provides opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some Liberty Mutual roles may have compensation plans that include commission and/or bonus earnings, depending on multiple factors set forth in the plan.
