Job Description

Synchrony offers flexible work arrangements with the option to work from home near one of our hubs or in one of our offices. For in-person engagement activities, you will commute to your nearest hub. This onsite role in Stamford, CT carries a salary range of USD 135,000 to 230,000 per year. The position focuses on leading security enablement initiatives for AI security and enterprise cloud migration, while providing technical leadership across diverse teams.

Role overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Staff Security Engineer to help drive technically complex projects that strengthen our Security Engineering function. This role designs and builds security enablement solutions for AI security and enterprise cloud migration, and provides strategic and hands-on leadership across cross-functional teams. The ideal candidate brings hands-on expertise across domains such as AI security, DevOps, cloud engineering, data protection, perimeter defense, and cryptography, with the ability to influence, collaborate, and advance security initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with security and technology leadership as a trusted advisor to shape the organization’s security strategy.
  • Lead and accelerate complex security initiatives across teams, identifying high-impact projects and guiding them to success.
  • Drive security technology innovation, challenge the status quo, and contribute strategic thought leadership.
  • Contribute to the development of cutting-edge security practices and technologies.
  • Provide strategic guidance to security leadership that informs the overall security strategy.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and collaboration within the Security Engineering organization.
  • Design and implement scalable, automated security solutions that bridge on‑premises security with cloud environments.
  • Serve as a senior hands-on resource and subject matter expert, partnering with security architects and engineers to propagate best practices across the company.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess, prioritize, and mitigate security risks throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Develop nuanced technical plans, document analyses, create visual diagrams, and communicate project trade-offs clearly.
  • Develop, maintain, and update security policies, standards, and procedures aligned with regulations and organizational goals.
  • Evaluate and integrate new security technologies, tools, and processes to improve the organization’s security posture, with clear requirements documentation.
  • Lead efforts to ensure AWS cloud services are designed and engineered with security best practices in mind.
  • Advise on strengthening core services such as data protection controls and network segmentation.
  • Act as a liaison between security and engineering teams to embed security across all stages of infrastructure and application development.
  • Represent the security function in technical discussions, architecture reviews, and governance processes.

Our way of working

We value flexibility and balance. You can work from home near a hub or come into a Synchrony office. If you choose to work onsite, you will participate in in-person activities at your nearest hub. Some Field Sales and Commercial roles may have location variations based on partner obligations or preferences.

Eligibility & onboarding

  • You must be 18 years or older
  • You must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and fingerprints as part of the onboarding process
  • You must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act
  • New hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before they are eligible to post on other roles. Once this new hire time in position requirement is met, the associate will have a minimum 6 months in position before they can post for future non-exempt roles. Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 18 months in position before they can post. All internal employees must consistently meet performance expectations and have approval from your manager
