Network Engineer III - Cybersecurity
Job Description
City of Norfolk seeks a senior Network Engineer III in the Cybersecurity Bureau to design, implement, and maintain secure, scalable network and security infrastructure with a focus on network defense and Microsoft 365 security; reports to the Chief Information Security Officer; compensation is USD 79,982 - 133,999 per year; location: Norfolk, VA with remote work eligibility.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and resolve sophisticated cybersecurity and network issues.
- Detect and remediate web browsing threats, malware infections, and intrusion attempts.
- Apply analytical reasoning to balance customer needs, operational realities, and technical constraints.
- Architect, specify, and deploy new cybersecurity hardware, software, and services.
- Administer and maintain firewalls, intrusion prevention systems (IPS), web content filtering, email protection, and endpoint detection and response (EDR) platforms.
- Continuously monitor, evaluate, and optimize security infrastructure for performance, resilience, and compliance.
- Collaborate with cross functional teams to deliver secure and scalable technology solutions.
- Contribute security expertise to technology initiatives from planning through implementation and support.
- Explain complex technical issues clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Produce accurate and concise documentation, memos, reports, and user guides.
- Deliver excellent service to City agencies and staff, ensuring timely and effective support.
- Keep technical documentation and automated work management systems up to date.
- Perform additional cybersecurity duties as directed by the Chief Information Security Officer.

Supplemental Information
- Work Location: 800 E. City Hall Ave, 1st Floor, Norfolk, VA 23510; Remote Work Eligible
- Work Hours: Monday β Friday, 8:30 AM β 5:00 PM. Forty hours per week to align with City operating hours. This is an Essential position requiring attendance during emergencies, delayed city openings, and severe weather events.
