Job Description

The IT Cybersecurity Specialist (CYBERMGT) role at the U.S. Department of Energy sits within the Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence and centers on coordinating enterprise cybersecurity tools across DOE-IN environments. This onsite position in Washington, DC offers a salary range of USD 143,913 to 187,093 per year and requires at least one year of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee the integration of enterprise cybersecurity tools, technologies, and capabilities across DOE-IN environments.
  • Maintain enterprise cybersecurity situational awareness from a tools and capability perspective, ensuring systems are integrated with enterprise tools such as SIEM, EDR, vulnerability management, and Next-Gen Firewall.
  • Provide expert technical guidance and strategic recommendations to senior leadership, external federal partners, and stakeholders on high-impact cybersecurity initiatives.
  • Direct ongoing system reviews, vulnerability assessments, and threat-mitigation planning to sustain operational continuity and strengthen overall infrastructure protection.
  • Lead the evaluation, acquisition, and allocation of strategic IT resources using Agile and systems engineering approaches to address highly complex, unprecedented technical issues.
  • Serve as a technical leader or primary representative on standing and ad-hoc cybersecurity boards, committees, and working groups to align agency-wide security goals.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizen or National status is required.
  • Employer participates in the e-Verify program.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must certify Selective Service registration or be exempt.
  • Appointment may be subject to suitability or fitness determination based on a background investigation.
  • One year of potential probationary period may be required.
  • This position is onsite; remote work is not available, though limited workplace flexibilities may apply for military spouses, veteran caregivers, and spouses of foreign service employees.
  • Financial Disclosure Statement (OGE-450) must be submitted upon entering and annually thereafter.
  • Position designated Special-Sensitive (High Risk) requiring a Q level security clearance; incumbent must obtain and maintain the clearance.
  • Requires Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance prior to entrance on duty.
  • Initial Counterintelligence (CI) evaluation and ongoing CI evaluations may be required, potentially including a CI-scope polygraph.
  • Testing Designated Position (TDP) with applicant testing and random drug testing; failure to test or a positive result may lead to removal from Federal employment.
  • Not included in a Bargaining Unit.
  • Hiring incentives may be authorized for highly qualified applicants, subject to budget and regulations.
  • Situational telework may be approved at the supervisor's discretion.
  • Occasional travel is required.
