The program provides structured training across the full cryptographic lifecycle and hands on experience that spans design, key and code production, vulnerability discovery, and applying cryptography in operational environments.
Responsibilities
- Participate in the Cybersecurity Engineering Development Program to build cybersecurity software engineering capabilities and leadership communication skills to meet cryptographic mission demands.
- Gain hands on experience across the entire cryptographic development lifecycle, including design and development, key/code production, vulnerability discovery, and operational application of cryptography.
- Complete 3 to 4 tours over a 3 year development period in crypto engineering categories: End Cryptographic Unit (ECU) Design/Development; Crypto Key Design/Development; Crypto Assessment and Certification; Crypto Application.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
- Related fields may be considered if the program includes a concentration in foundational CS areas: algorithms, computer architecture, programming methodologies and languages, data structures, logic and computation, and advanced mathematics.
- Relevant experience must be in the software development process (requirements analysis, software design, implementation, testing, integration, deployment/installation, maintenance) and programming.
- Entry/Developmental is open to candidates with a Bachelor's degree and no professional experience.
- An Associate's degree plus 2 years of relevant experience may be considered for individuals with in depth experience related to the position.

Competencies
- Strong background in advanced mathematics (number theory, abstract algebra, linear algebra, probability, discrete math).
- Solid grasp of data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and computer architecture.
- Proficiency in C/C++, Python, and Java.
- Knowledge of symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, including hash functions, encryption, digital signatures, and key exchange.
- Familiarity with TLS/SSL and secure network principles.
- Understanding of hardware security modules (HSMs) and secure cloud platforms.
- Experience with SIEM, IDS, and vulnerability assessment tools.
- Knowledge of cryptographic libraries, APIs, and security standards (NIST, ISO 27001, OWASP).
Pay, Benefits, and Work Schedule
- Salary range: $87,362 – $123,388 per year for Entry/Developmental levels; actual figure varies by education, experience, and work level.
- Work schedule: full-time, Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day, with a flexible window between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
- Training is provided based on the selectee's needs and experience.
- DCIPS trial period: two years if selected, or one year for veterans preference eligible employees; the trial runs concurrently with the position.
- Upon completion, the agency will determine continued employment based on performance, conduct, and organizational needs.
