Cybersecurity Engineer

The Cybersecurity Engineer role is an onsite position based in Columbia, Maryland, focusing on designing, implementing, and managing enterprise security controls across network, identity, endpoint, and cloud domains under the guidance of senior engineers and security architects.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain enterprise cybersecurity architecture across network, endpoint, identity, and cloud domains in line with approved designs.
• Engineer, configure, and sustain core security platforms, including SIEM, EDR/XDR, IDS/IPS, email security, and vulnerability management tools.
• Apply established security architecture standards and control requirements defined by senior engineers and security architects.
• Collaborate with IT infrastructure, networking, and application teams to securely deploy systems and services.
• Automate security workflows and integrate tooling to enhance operational efficiency and incident response effectiveness.
• Support incident response through remediation engineering, improved containment, and optimization of controls.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree with 3 to 5 years of cybersecurity experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and professional practice, including activities such as enterprise security awareness training, software assessments, policy maintenance and creation, vulnerability management, controls evaluation, compliance and audit planning, testing, and reporting.
• Develop, tune, and maintain detection rules, correlation logic, and alerting within SIEM and monitoring platforms.
• Implement endpoint security controls including EDR/XDR, system hardening, and patch management strategies.
• Engineer network security controls such as firewalls, segmentation, access control lists, and IDS/IPS.
• Support secure design and deployment of campus network infrastructure, integrating PON, wireless, and edge connectivity into the security model.
• Implement identity and access management controls including authentication, authorization, and privileged access enforcement.
• Conduct vulnerability scanning, validate remediation, and assist with risk prioritization activities.
• Deploy and maintain technical security controls required for regulatory compliance (GLBA, FERPA), audit readiness, and cyber insurance requirements.
• Own lifecycle management, tuning, and performance optimization of security tools and controls.
• Document system configurations, engineering standards, implementation procedures, and operational runbooks.
• Provide technical guidance to cybersecurity analysts and IT staff on tool usage and security best practices.
• Demonstrate experience implementing enterprise security technologies and controls at scale.
• Possess advanced knowledge of network architecture (Layers 1–3), firewalls, VPNs, segmentation, and secure protocols.
• Experience with security platforms such as SIEM (example: Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel), EDR/XDR, vulnerability scanners, and email security systems.
• Working knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks and compliance requirements, including NIST, CIS Controls, GLBA, and FERPA.
• Ability to deliver secure, scalable, and resilient solutions aligned with institutional standards.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, including technical documentation.
• Experience in higher education or similarly complex enterprise environments is preferred.
• Participates in escalation and on-call support for critical security incidents.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
