Senior Consultant I, Cybersecurity
Job Description
The Senior Consultant I, Cybersecurity at American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) provides cybersecurity technical expertise across multiple engagements. This role supports delivery quality on schedule and within budget, contributes to client relationships and proposal activities, and involves frequent travel to client sites (50%+), despite being based in Washington, DC (remote).
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver cybersecurity expertise across project tasks to ensure quality services are provided on schedule and within the available budget, aligned to customer requirements, with frequent status updates to the project manager.
- Support the project manager by defining and sequencing tasks, estimating task duration, and contributing to a project schedule under the project management plan.
- Review project management plans to understand scope, schedule, and assigned work authorization.
- Plan and schedule client meetings and participate in client and internal project team meetings.
- Conduct research and data analysis, including customer or stakeholder analyses.
- Prepare written deliverables such as documents, reports, and presentations, including drafting reports, developing conclusions and recommendations, and supporting client presentations and oral briefing efforts.
- Track and report hours spent executing projects.
- Collaborate across levels to contribute to reports and deliverables, manage multiple assignments, meet agreed deadlines, and adapt to changing client demands.
- Perform quality assurance on project deliverables.
- Support multiple client engagements involving NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF).
- Support multiple client engagements involving Assessment and Authorization (A&A).
- Support client engagements for security control implementation and validation, and cyber compliance reviews and inspection support.
- Support vulnerability assessment, scanning, and remediation.
- Support secure configuration, patching, and system hardening.
- Prepare and maintain cybersecurity artifacts such as SSPs, POA&Ms, policies, procedures, risk documentation, and assessment support materials.
- Review systems, architectures, and documentation against requirements including NIST, DoD, DON, NAVSEA, MSC, and client-specific cybersecurity requirements.
- Assist business development by developing relationships with existing customers to support new opportunities for current and/or additional services, including learning ABS Consulting cybersecurity products and services.
- Meet with new and existing clients, actively listen to needs, and communicate client requirements to project managers and supervisors, including emerging threats, regulatory changes, compliance drivers, and technology requirements.
- Review published reports and news articles about existing and potential clients to support customer intelligence.
- Participate in proposal development and proposal writing; represent ABS Consulting and support promotion of products and services.
- Support marketing activities, including conference presentations and technical whitepapers, and network to meet potential clients.
- Maintain relationships with clients and key decision makers to help identify new business opportunities.
Travel and Work Location
While the position is remote, regular travel (50%+) to client sites and project locations is a core part of the role.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of relevant professional experience.
- Must have or be able to get and maintain an Active Security Clearance.
- Ability to gain, retain, comprehend, and transfer knowledge to other team members.
- Ability to mentor and coach less experienced consultants and support development of technical skills in others.
- Ability to actively listen to client needs, determine context, ask probing questions, retain information for future use, and respond with practical solutions.
- Ability to utilize established rapport and technical expertise with existing clients to facilitate development of new business.
- Must understand departmental goals and hold self accountable for commitments and high standards.
- Demonstrate strong time management skills.
- Hands-on experience with NIST Risk Management Framework and NIST SP 800-53.
- Experience supporting DoD assessment and authorization activities.
- Experience with vulnerability assessment and scanning tools such as Tenable Nessus, ACAS, or Security Center.
- Understanding of TCP/IP networking and troubleshooting.
- Experience with Windows and Linux security concepts, patching, and configuration management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional certification.
- Familiarity with eMASS, HBSS, VRAM, DADMS, and TWMS.
- Experience with Python or PowerShell.
- Experience with Operational Technology (OT), Industrial Control Systems (ICS), shipboard, afloat, Navy, MSC, or NAVSEA environments.
- Ability to obtain working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental Management System.

Reporting and Security
- Reports to a manager, director, or executive-level position (no direct reports).
- U.S. Citizenship required for roles supporting government contracts.
Compensation
USD 100,000 - 120,000 per year.
