Cybersecurity Engineer I
Job Description
Atlantic Health System offers a hybrid cybersecurity role in Morristown, NJ with senior-engineer mentorship and hands-on operational exposure across vulnerability management, alert triage, data protection, and incident response support. You will work from established runbooks and procedures while building deeper technical ownership through training, cross-training, and certification progression.
Responsibilities
- Run scheduled and ad hoc vulnerability scans using Rapid7 InsightVM and Tenable Nessus, validate scan coverage and credentialed scan success, and prepare findings for senior review and risk-based prioritization.
- Track vulnerability, audit, and assessment remediation to closure by maintaining tickets with IT, infrastructure, application, and vendor owners, validating fixes, and escalating stalled findings.
- Perform first-level triage for security alerts, user-reported phishing, and findings escalated by the managed security services provider, documenting context and escalating based on defined criteria.
- Support data protection and identity operations, including initial triage of Microsoft Purview and Varonis Data Loss Prevention alerts, periodic access and privileged access reviews, and cleanup of stale accounts and entitlements.
- Manage intake and coordination for cybersecurity request queues, including exception requests, security reviews, vendor questionnaires, and application requests, ensuring completeness and preparing submissions for senior review.
- Help maintain the health and coverage of security tooling such as EDR, device management, and logging agents; produce recurring metrics, dashboards, and runbooks, and support the security awareness and phishing simulation program.
- Support incident response activities as part of the team, including evidence and log collection, documentation, and directed containment tasks, with collaboration across ISS, Privacy, and Compliance.
- Participate in the team on-call rotation after an initial ramp-up period of roughly three months, with rotation coverage coming about once every two months.
- Pursue certification and cross-training to build technical depth and progressive ownership, advancing your cybersecurity career.
Requirements
- Ability to work from established runbooks and procedures under direction and mentorship of senior engineers.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or a related field is preferred; equivalent professional experience, military experience, or certifications will be considered.
- Foundational security certification strongly preferred: CompTIA Security+, (ISC)² SSCP, or CompTIA CySA+. If hired without one, obtain within 12 months.
- Progress toward certifications such as Microsoft SC-900, SC-200, or AZ-500 is supported through the team’s training program.
- One to three years of experience in IT, service desk, systems or network administration, or cybersecurity with hands-on security exposure; relevant internship, military, or substantive home lab experience will be considered.
- Solid foundation in cybersecurity concepts including defense in depth, least privilege, risk-based prioritization, CVSS scoring, and common attack types (phishing, ransomware, credential theft), with conceptual familiarity with MITRE ATT&CK and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and awareness of HIPAA requirements for protecting ePHI.
- Working knowledge of Windows and Linux, Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID, and networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls, VPN, and proxy services. Exposure to PowerShell or Python and an ITSM process such as ServiceNow is a plus.
- Familiarity with enterprise security tooling categories including EDR, SIEM, vulnerability scanning, email security, DLP, and cloud security, with hands-on experience in at least one.
- Genuine passion for cybersecurity demonstrated by curiosity, self-directed learning, and enthusiasm for unfamiliar problems.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and multiple concurrent assignments.
- Strong follow-through and ownership, including judgment to escalate appropriately; clear written communication and disciplined documentation habits with discretion for confidential information.
