Job Description

Join the U S Securities and Exchange Commission as a Cybersecurity Automation Engineer in Washington, DC, onsite. This role offers a competitive salary between USD 153,114 and 259,402 per year, along with a comprehensive benefits package for eligible federal employees. You will design, build, and sustain automation to strengthen security operations, infrastructure as code, security tool integrations, and SOAR playbooks across on premises and cloud environments, while serving as a senior technical authority and leading automation projects.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain automation for infrastructure and configuration, using configuration-management and orchestration tools to deploy, harden, and sustain enterprise security platforms at scale.
  • Create and uphold integrations between security and IT tools through REST and Graph APIs and custom Python to automate data exchange, enrichment, and workflow handoffs across the environment.
  • Develop, test, and operate SOAR playbooks that automate triage, enrichment, containment, and response actions in coordination with the security operations center.
  • Apply software engineering discipline to automation artifacts, including source control, peer reviews, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines to ensure reliable, auditable, and repeatable delivery.
  • Maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot production automation, managing versioning, dependencies, and secret-handling lifecycles to keep workflows secure and current.
  • Serve as the senior technical authority and escalation point for automation issues, lead automation projects end-to-end, and oversee the technical work of supporting contractor staff.
  • Collaborate with the SOC, logging and observability, network operations, cloud infrastructure and operations teams, and product vendors to scope, integrate, and improve automation capabilities.
  • Engineer automation across hybrid environments, including serverless and AI-assisted cloud workflows where appropriate.
  • Translate manual, repetitive operational and response tasks into resilient automated workflows that reduce toil and improve mean time to respond.

Requirements

  • Citizenship: You must be a US citizen.
  • Selective Service: Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.
  • Security Clearance: Entrance on duty is contingent upon completion of a pre-employment security investigation; a favorable Background Investigation may be required for employment or other positions.
  • Permanent Change of Station: Moving/relocation expenses are not authorized.
  • Direct Deposit: Federal salary payments must be made by direct deposit.
  • Probationary Period: This appointment may require a one-year probationary period.
  • Duties location: The selectee is required to report to the listed duty station(s).
  • On-call requirement: The duties may require carrying a cell phone and being on call 24/7 on a rotating basis.
  • Attention to Detail: Thorough and meticulous in work with careful attention to detail.
  • Customer Service: Works with clients to assess needs, provide information, resolve problems, and ensure quality service.
  • Oral Communication: Communicates information clearly to diverse audiences and responds appropriately to feedback.
  • Problem Solving: Identifies issues, evaluates information, and makes reasoned recommendations.
  • Automating security workflows to support integrations, orchestration playbooks, and testing.
  • Designing security automations that support secure deployment pipelines and infrastructure as code practices.
  • Preparing guidance related to adopting or retiring automation capabilities in light of cloud automation.
  • Applying AI/ML techniques to security automation initiatives with appropriate governance and risk management controls.
