Responsibilities
- Monitor and analyze security events using Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tools to surface potential threats and vulnerabilities.
- Assist with cybersecurity tool implementation and management, including Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR), firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection systems (IDS).
- Support network security activities, including configuring and maintaining Cisco ASA and Cisco ISE, and working with IPsec, TCP/IP, and DNS protocols.
- Help perform vulnerability assessments and security risk investigations across IT infrastructure, LAN/WAN networks, and cloud environments.
- Participate in incident response tasks, including investigating security breaches, supporting incident recovery plans, and documenting findings aligned to NIST standards.
- Collaborate on system security hardening across Windows, Linux distributions (Debian, CentOS), and virtualization platforms (VMware, vSphere).
- Support compliance efforts for ISO 27001, ISO 27002, PCI standards, FISMA, FedRAMP, and other information security frameworks.
Requirements
- Strong interest in learning on the job; this apprenticeship does not require existing cybersecurity skills, and you will need to pass an apprenticeship assessment before being matched with an employer.
- Strong interest in computer networking concepts, including LAN/WAN architecture, routing protocols such as OSPF or BGP, and general network support fundamentals.
- Basic understanding of cybersecurity principles, including encryption, access management (RBAC), threat detection & response, vulnerability management, and system hardening.
- Familiarity with operating systems, with preferred experience across Windows, Linux (Ubuntu or openSUSE), and mobile platforms (Android or iOS).
- Knowledge of cybersecurity tools is advantageous, including Nmap, Burp Suite, SolarWinds, and Fiddler.
- Ability to learn new technologies quickly and take a proactive approach to problem-solving within a team environment.
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail for log analysis, report writing, and security assessment documentation.
